Roman Polanski Apologizes

TV Thoughts for the Week of September 26, 2011

2 Broke Girls: Bleh. I’d like to see them function at work more than argue at home. And the whole horse thing has lost any sense of reality, but they are willing to trade any realism for a poop joke. I’m guessing someone would have reported them having a Horse in the city or someone would have untied it at this point. But the blonde slips in poop, it’s hilarious… if I was five. I worry they’re finding too much success in the cupcake venture as well. It just seems too rushed, hopefully they encounter some set backs to keep the show’s name appropriate.

Biggest Loser: Only caught a small portion, but what I did see was a yogurt commercial. Loser does this a lot where they stage little commercials for products during the show. It drives me crazy and really makes them look like a third rate reality show, which they are.

New Girl: So now that Waynes’ has chosen to do Happy Endings instead they brought in a new male black roommate who had lived there before, and he’s not as good as Waynes. Still loved this episode mainly because Schmidt and Jess did all the heavy lifting and her ex being a big nerd that she has this strong attraction to. Really fun confrontation over getting her stuff with her new friends. Also enjoy Cece as the model with a soft spot for Jess. Show keeps getting better despite the less interesting men.

Raising Hope: The whole pick me or the toilet storyline with the parents was stupid, but the main one with Jimmy teaching Sabrina you shouldn’t attack your wealthy relatives and family friends just because you disagree with them a lot. And the velcro wall was a nice touch.

Modern Family: The dog pampering and fasting stuff really didn’t do much for me but the rope walking had a nice little message in it about taking action. Still, show feels flat compared to previous seasons.

Suburgatory: Really in the middle on this one, I like the main stars but the setting is over the top and can use more subtlety. For instance, a girl walked into a pool while texting and didn’t blink as her boobs acted like flotation devices, it just seemed disconnected from any type of reality when you can really hit this out of the park with some of the real stuff that goes on in the ‘burbs.

Revenge: Another one bites the dust. Amanda still keeps Nolan at arms length which will probably bite her in the ass later. No idea why everyone acts like Nolan raped their Moms, as he seems like a sad chap who is trying to buy friends.

Parks and Recreation: Huge Ron fan and he was great, but the episode did have this kinda campy feeling to it with two Tammies battling for Ron’s soul. Loved how he manned up and drunk the moonshine though, especially using the pinky loop and resting it on his shoulder. Goose bumps. Ben playing straight man off of Tom is always a overflowing comedy well.

The Office: Brilliant episode. Spader is like 10 Michael Scotts. The sweet yet backhanded comment about Andy being the underdog needed to unite the workers just shows how great of a character he has become. Also a nice touch of the Office to put something Any would actually like on his butt. And the triangle iPad ripoff just hurts my head to think about.

Whitney: That was a rough episode with the first date thing, Whit comes off as more annoying than quirky at this point. Really starting to run out of excuses for watching this as it has offered very little, but I hold out hope that these first episodes are just early hiccups of a show yet to find its stride.

Harry’s Law: Jean Smart plays a great bitch. Really been dying to see this go to trial and see who dun it once and for all.

TV Thoughts for the Week of September 19, 2011

How I Met Your Mother: SHOW. GETTING. SO. STALE. Martin Short was a disappointment in his role. Robyn thinking of getting back with Barney and then later Ted felt like an awful retread, really wish they’d give her enough power from returning to her own vomit. Also, the spoiled Barney and Robyn marrying Barney in the future by having Lilly as her maid of honor. Smooth move CBS. The baby will be the peak of the shark jumping.

2 Broke Girls: Some of the overly sexual jokes seemed flat and forced but I like this show and will probably catch it again. I thought the blonde did a little better, or at least she was a little more refined than Kat’s character, who goes from bitch, to menopausal middle aged hag, to sassy fat black woman, to caring person in the drop of a hat.

Two and a Half Men: Really bad. They couldn’t even try to muster some sympathy for Charlie, the whole funeral scene was to stroke Lorre’s ego. A random whore exclaiming Charlie gave her herpes didn’t add up since all his other exes were there and no one else chimed in with another herpes claim. Charlie being in debt made no sense either. Ashton helped me remember why Kelso was such a good character for him… he was only the focus when he was made the butt of a joke.

His whole sad Internet Nerd suicide thing was weak, and an insult to those who suffer from deep depression. Within just a few short hours he’s already over her and cutting Alan out of 4 way, which was stupid to begin with. Why did they get rid of Courtney Thorn Smith? This could have had legs if her and Alan were taking Ashton in and being the parents he never had, instead the main plot point is Ashton has a big penis. Remember that… it’ll probably be the only thing they’ll manage to remind us of every episode.

Hawaii Five-0: Thought this was decent, although kinda has this intense Prison Break feel were something is always going against them and it will come down to the wire, but hey it has John Fuckin Locke doing what he does best… and also Alex Mack as a spy. Man did she get frumpy.

The Sing-Off: I dunno, I think this year might be an off year because no group really excited me like last season. I do think this has some of the best judging of any singing show right now, so hopefully they steer these groups into the right direction.

Biggest Loser: Adding Anna was a cute twist, and I found it kinda funny she ends up with the oldest group of people. I often wonder if chubby chasers wait till this show is done then watch it in reverse order. Pretty much the same old, Bob has some sick fetish for breaking former athletes. It’s like they bullied him or didn’t pay him enough attention in HS.

New Girl: I enjoyed this. I think the concept of a group of guys teaching a girl to be a girl is a fresh concept and it was fun. Now, that doesn’t mean it is perfect… I’d like to see the bartender guy do more than facial expressions and the Waynes kid not be so forced and corny with the whole anger issue. But overall the girl lead is carrying this to perfectly watchable.

Raising Hope: This won the week in my eyes. Funny stuff. The whole idea of Jimmy being musically talented as a kid and losing it due to getting hit by Burt’s putter was fun stuff, especially the way his Mom put him on the spot to perform, and MeMa’s teaching methods were great too. Also enjoyed the idea that they diagnose things from what they saw on TV. As a nerd I can appreciate a good reference. And Sabrina being one of the few views Jimmy has on youtube was a cute touch.

Modern Family: Par for the course. Fun shows but nothing compared to what they’re capable of, in fact the whole thing with Dylan thinking Claire was into him was a recycled bit, his surprise exit was a fun twist though. Alex having a summer fling was a cute bit. Seems like the new Lilly is getting a lot more screen time than the first, kinda wish they let the first one grow into the part instead of doing the Hollywood thing and having a baby go from a sleeping glob to a walking talking monster. Seems funny a show that puts the spotlight on a diverse caring family changes out babies like tires.

Revenge: Ballsy move showing a death well into the future to start us off but it got my attention. Really corny and soapish at times but I like it strangely enough. Watching Amanda getting revenge on Hamptons elite for what they did to her father sounds like fun, although the first person to feel her sting got a Vincent van Gogh painting, kicked out of the Hamptons, and lost a bitch of a friend… First world problems. Also wish she teamed up with the Internet Millionaire that’s on every show now, instead she made a new enemy for no real reason at all.

Big Bang Theory: I’m really drawing a blank here, both episodes were totally forgettable, probably because I was flipping back and forth between Community and Community was winning. So yeah, Penny gave Raj a handjob and Leonard sucks at cybering… that’s really the gist of it. Really over the top crap that needs more Sheldon.

Community: Liked the prison teacher but disliked the group disbanding in a way again. They can do better.

Parks and Recreation: Seems like even on episodes that aren’t out of the ballpark good the shows still has funny moments, like it being revealed that Jerry has a big penis… that’s how you do it Two and a Half, build up a character as a loser for years and then in a way unknown to himself let it be known he’s hung. Also, Andy at the shoe shine booth shutting down for make out sessions with April is gold. Looking forward to him as Snope’s ass.

The Office: Andy is an interesting choice, I’ll be watching to see what they do with him. Spader dividing the office as Winners and Losers is so delightfully evil, his character is so great I hope they work him into every episode. Kevin winding up on the Winners side is always good for a cheap laugh. Also, Andy standing up to him was a touching moment. Really strong first episode back.

Whitney: Wow, that was rough. I was looking forward to this too. So outside of the main couple the co-stars are very weak. You have a really bad Barney ripoff, a woman who is single and angry at men for what an ex did, and this other couple that consists of a girl I’ve never seen before and Jonathan, the gay receptionist from 30 Rock. Just really feels odd trying to buy him as straight, especially since he sounds the same. The whole we don’t have enough sex plot seemed really flat. I mean, it sounds like a real easy solution, but instead the whole thing turns into a fiasco that ends in the hospital. It feels like Whitney being silly will get old fast. Really was pulling for this one too.

Harry’s Law: Thought everything with Harry in it felt strong, Christopher McDonald can also hold down his scenes as Tommy Jefferson, a struggling daytime TV commercial judge. Did not like the whole painting subplot that seems to be going to lead the black female lawyer into an affair. Harry taking a bad case and facing the second fattest designing women lady has money written all over it.

Big Brother 13 Over

Big Brother is over. I’m not too upset that Rachel won, although I was pulling for Porche just by the end, which shows just how thin the field gets when you get to two people who would find themselves in the end of a game filled with lying and backstabbing.

The only big complaint I have is the Pandora’s Box that Porche chose, which gave her less money than what Jeff got on a random game and forced her to nominate people in her own alliance. The stipulation was that they’d be nominated as pairs, so Jordan and Rachel paired up, meaning if they won VETO she’d be force to put up the pair of Shelley and Adam.

Guess what the VETO challenge was? Hanging on a dummy, which was exactly like the first HoH comp that Rachel won. Rachel’s biggest claim to fame is hanging onto a Dummy, that’s all she does with Brendon. Guess who won easily? I’ll give you a hint, she has bad skin and a funny upper lip. It just struck me as odd that they’d make it so obvious that they were rigging this for a vet to win, especially what happened next…

Rachel won HoH and also got a Pandora’s box, except when she chose it all it meant is the others got to go on a shopping spree and she couldn’t. No crazy game changing shit, she didn’t get to go shopping. Such bullshit. Big Brother seems to always find a way to make you hate the fact you watched it by the end, and this season was no different.
